Qualifying threw up a stir when Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen got eliminated in Q2 due to a bad tyre choice and strategy. A 21 year old young Sebastian Vettel surprised when he put his car on pole position in a soaked Monza qualifying. Kovalainen joined him on the front row with Webber and Bourdais locking out the 2nd row. Bourdais stalled his car on the grid which saw him losing a lap, while the rest of the field started behind the safetycar. Vettel bolted from the restart leading Kovalainen, Webber and Rosberg in turn 1. Vettel already had 2 second gap after the first lap. Glock spun on lap 6 while he was trying to overtake Alonso. Vettel on the other hand pulled out 6 seconds in 3 laps. Raikkonen and Hamilton both passed Fisichella for P11 and P12 on lap 10. Hamilton passed Raikkonen for 11th into the first lesmo a lap later. Hamilton started to march through the field overtaking Heidfeld for P10. Massa also overtook Rosberg for p4. Adrian Sutil his day ended when he hit Coulthard resulting in him crashing into parabolica. Vettel pulled out over 10 seconds heading into lap 16 while Hamilton overtook both Glock and Kubica for p8. Raikkonen on the other hand was still only in 12th. Vettel stopped on lap 18 for his first pitstop of the day rejoining in 4th. Hamilton flew past Alonso on the main straight for p7. Race leader Kovalainen Webber and Massa all made their first pitstops on lap 22. Hamilton made further progress overtaking Trulli and Rosberg. Hamilton challenged Vettel for first place until he made his pitstop. Raikkonen also finally started to make progress overtaking Glock and Trulli for 10th. Webber spun on cold tyres on lap 35. Race leader Vettel came into the pits to switch to intermediates on lap 36. Hamilton also made his pitstop rejoining and immediately overtaking Webber for 7th. Hamilton his progress stopped with him being stuck behind Massa. Coulthard and Nakajima made contact in parabolica sending Kazuki into the gravel. But all eyes where on 21 year old Sebastian Vettel as he crossed the line to be the youngest grand prix winner in F1 history. Kovalainen finished 2nd followed by Kubica, Alonso, Heidfeld, Massa, Hamilton and Webbber.
